How Glaucoma Screening Works

Glaucoma screening measures eye pressure (tonometry), examines the optic nerve after dilatation, images the nerve fibre layer with OCT and maps the visual field with computerised perimetry. Corneal thickness refines the interpretation.
No single test diagnoses glaucoma — the specialist combines all findings. Adults over 40, those with a family history, diabetics and long-term steroid users should be screened periodically.
If glaucoma is confirmed, treatment with drops, laser or surgery aims to preserve remaining vision. Lost vision cannot be recovered, which makes early detection everything.
