When Should Flashes and Floaters Be Checked?

Published 12 Jan 2026 · Reviewed by the clinical team, Sentra Clinic & Hospital

Floaters are small shadows cast on the retina by clumps in the eye's gel. Long-standing, stable floaters that drift with eye movement are usually harmless.

However, seek a same-day dilated retinal examination if you notice a sudden increase in floaters, new flashes of light (especially in dim light), or a curtain-like shadow across your vision. These can indicate a retinal tear, which is quick to treat with laser but can progress to retinal detachment if ignored.

People with high myopia, diabetes or a history of eye surgery should be especially prompt. When in doubt, get checked — the examination is painless and the reassurance (or early treatment) is worth it.
