Why Regular Diabetic Eye Examinations Matter

Published 02 Feb 2026 · Reviewed by the clinical team, Sentra Clinic & Hospital

Diabetes damages the retina's small blood vessels silently. By the time vision blurs, disease is often advanced — yet early changes are highly treatable with injections, laser and better systemic control.

Guidance: type 2 diabetics should have a dilated retinal examination at diagnosis; type 1 within five years. Thereafter, yearly checks if the retina is normal, more often if changes exist. Pregnancy with diabetes needs closer review.

Keep HbA1c, blood pressure and lipids in range — eye treatment works best when systemic control supports it.
